Ipoh Good Food GPS

We just came back from our holidays in Penang and Ipoh.
Both are famous for street food. Penang’s Asam spicy, and Ipoh tasty street food.
Click for our previous Penang and Ipoh itinerary.

We will share our Ipoh Good Food (map and GPS) in this blog post, which should cover your family for 2 days worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner. It will be easy to gain 1 kg in 2 days :p

We visited most of the food in 2013. First up, Cuttlefish Kang Kong!
We mention this dish from Ipoh Garden last year. It is that good ๐Ÿ™‚

Breakfast or Tea break at Ipoh, Sin Yoon Loong and Nam Heong (ๅ—้ฆ™) will not disappoint. They are just opposite to each other and both are always packed.
Ipoh White Coffee

Egg tart – Sin Yoon Loong’s egg custard is jelly-like (above pic), and Nam Heong’s is freshly baked, with a crust to die for.

White Coffee – Daddy feels Sin Yong Loong’s white coffee is slightly more bitter (aromatic), individual preference. Both are so Good!

We will recommend the Char Kway Teow and Teochew soup noodle at Nam Heong too.

If you spot this carrot cake motorbike, order one carrot cake for breakfast!

Nam Heong – (scores 4.5/5)
Sin Yoon Loong – (4.25/5)

For lunch, drive 10 min to Jalan Yeu Tet Shin where two famous chicken stalls await.
Lou Wong (่€้ป„) and Ong Kee (ๅฎ‰่ฎฐ).

Besides the tender chicken, the famous side dish must be Ipoh’s fat bean sprout.
Crunchy and juicy, it goes well with the oily chicken.

(Ong Kee is opposite)

~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~
After lunch, gulp down some cooling soya bean at Funny mountain. It will wash away the oil from the chicken too.
Cars are queuing up for the splendid soya beancurd. To look like a local, enjoy your bowl of ่ฑ†่Šฑ (beancurd) inside your vehicle! Just ask the kids to be careful. ( Rated 4.25/5 )
Funny Mountain is a 5min walk from Lou Wong Chicken.
Snacks – There are a few ๅœŸไบงๅบ— (souvenir and local delicacy) around the chicken restaurants. We recommend you buy some 3-in-1 White coffee and biscuits home.
Hungry after shopping? Walk 5 min to order a pack of Salted baked chicken (็›็„—้ธก) from Aun Kheng Lim. You can actually drive over, and just shout out your order ็›้ธกไธ€็›’! (one pack)
This map will show the locations and proximity between three of the food joints listed above.
1 = Sin Yoon Loong and Nam Heong
2 = Lou Huang and Funny Mountain
3 = Aun Kheng Lim salted chicken
Dinner and supper, pop by Rainbow street. A 10min walk (North East) from Lou Wong.
Tang2 Sui3 Jie1 (็ณ–ๆฐด่ก—) otherwise known as Dessert Street too. At least 3 stalls are selling dessert.
We recommend the mixed fruit bowl (bottom left photo), it comes with an assortment of fruits and jellies.
Dinner at Ipoh Garden – all of Ipoh’s good food under one roof. You must pop by Ipoh Garden if you only have one night in Ipoh. Refer to our first picture, Cuttlefish kang kong (4.5/5) will be on every table !
Ipoh Dinner recommendation
Ipoh Garden (only for Dinner and supper) and Woolley Food City (open till 5 or 6pm only). We rate Ipoh Garden experience (and variety) a score of (5/5).
N 04 36.663, E 101 06.629
Woolley Food City Breakfast – The soup noodles (3.5/5) and Wanton Noodles (3.75/5) are good !
Ignore Boon Yee’s cheeky thumbdown, his western food (fries and hotdog what else) was popular with the siblings.
Before heading home, packet some snacks and buns from Pau LangKap ๅ†ท็”ฒๅŒ…. We love the Char Siew Bao and fluffy huat4 kueh4 (yes the huat-kueh used for Chinese traditions)
Too many varieties of Bao to choose from, the food court seems popular with diners too. The ๅคงๅŒ… feeds two adults !
  1. Hi, I will go Ipoh with my family next week. Can I check with you the distance from Ipoh toll to Golden Point Food court, is it very far? Did they serve lunch as well? Thanks a lot!
    1. hi Pinnky,
      no idea the distance from Toll to “Golden Point”, but Golden is about 30min drive from Ipoh center.
      It is a industrial area and first timers might have some challenges finding the food court.
      We notice the Food court lunchtime is crowed.
      cheers,
      andy
  2. Hi,
    I planning to travel north to Ipoh and probably Penang with my family, would appreciate if you could advise us the path along to enjoy food and accommodation.
    we are 3 adults and 2 children, travel period about 1 ~ 2 weeks.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Sean
    1. Hi Sean,
      I would recommend that you fly to Penang then drive South to Ipoh (2 hours).
      Spend 60 to 70% of your time in Penang.
      Ipoh very little attraction for kids besides the Lost World, it is mostly Food, food , Food.
      As for Food and attraction recommendations, do checkout my blog’s links (end of page).
      Would recommend you pop by Cheekiemonkie, MissTamchiak and “ipoh motormouth” blogs for more references.
      cheers,
      1. Hi Andy,
        Thanks for the sharing.
        I am planning a trip in coming Dec period to Penang. I was also thinking of adding Ipoh to the itinerary since they are just two hours driving distance.
        Can you kindly advice the following:-
        1) Are there any interesting things to do for children? My sons are aged 8 and 10 respectively.
        2) You mentioned to drive South to ipoh? You mean to rent a car from Penang and drive to Ipoh and then back to Penang airport. Where can I rent the car and how much is the rental?
        I look forward to your reply, thank you.
        1. Hi Juvon,
          we rent/return our van at Penang airport. Read this blog post for vendor “Kasina” (https://sengkangbabies.com/holiday/bao-sheng-durian-penang).
          Take note you need SG driving license to drive in Penang, but Ipoh no need ๐Ÿ™‚
          Ipoh
          – adult itinerary – keep eating!
          – Kids – they will like (https://sengkangbabies.com/holiday/lost-world-of-tambun) (You can stay n theme park for 2 to 4 hours easily, seems like only Fun activity for kids)
          cheers, Andy
  3. Whoa, glorioous food! I miss Penang! We drove there twice but not been food hunting much! WIll certainly check these out if we go there again! Thanks.
  4. It’s a mistake to read this post at 1am, my stomach is growling now! I heard about the nice food in Ipoh, I must bring my boys there one day. This will come in handy, thanks!
  5. Reading this post from 10,000 miles away with zero access to food remotely similar to anything here. But still “inhaling” everything as I read and see all the yummy pics. Looks like a epic gastronomic trip!
