Gu Ma Jia CNY dishes

We were invited to a Chinese New Year food tasting session at 姑妈家 Gu Ma Jia.
Yes, our reunion dinner and Cny dishes was in December 🙂

Healthy and nutritious, Gu Ma Jia recipes are known for less msg, less oil and salt.
But the home-cooked style food is always delicious.

First Lo Hei 捞魚生 for 2019.

Refreshing, crab stick and abalone. All Cny dishes need to come with a Lo Hei.
I am sure the mood would be even more festive nearer to Feb 2019 🙂

We love the Lobster Cold Platter ($138).

Cny dishes

The platters come with fresh salad lobster, smoked duck, clams with onion. There is something for everyone.

The presentation whets our appetite, where should we start first.

Sweet and Sour Grouper with lychee.

Deep fried, crispy surface and tender meat. The lychee was an interesting mix. Crunchy dish, we could not stop munching.

Mrs comment that the sweet and sour sauce might have overpowered the fish taste.

Flaming Pork rib

This is one of the signature dish at Gu Ma Jia.  The entry sure was exciting, with flames burning hot!

Juicy and fragrant treat.

Assam Fish Head

This might be the most famous dish at Gu Ma jia. Spicy and Sour at the same time, we all love the assam gravy.

Although we were perspiring we just could not help but keep scooping the delightful gravy. I can savour this dish paired with white rice. Yummy.

Super fresh!

Enzyme drink to cool us down. This is a speciality healthy dessert from Gu Ma Jia, some of the benefits are :

-Relieve constipation and cleanses the digestive tract
-Detoxify and revitalize body cells
-Lower cholesterol level

The enzyme are extracted from fruits (combination of pears, papaya and apples), there is a tinge of vinegar in the concoction.

Each glass of goodness cost $5.80.

Yuan Yang Kai Lan

Hard to chew the stalk, just enjoy the “leaves”. Crunchy texture.

Claypot sesame oil chicken

Ideal for Mums (and Dads) undergoing maternity phase. The ginger and sesame broth really titillates our appetite.

I felt nourished, just by looking at the broth.
This is definitely my comfort food, and I had at least three bowls!

Herbal chicken, with a lot of ingredients.

Cooling 雪蛤

Finally desserts, not sure whether English name is Frog egg (xue3 ge2).
Refreshing and cooling, but kids did like the “jelly” texture.

They are missing the good stuffs.

Chinese New Year is just two months away. If you are shortlisting for reunion dinner venue, Gu Ma Jia might be a good recommendation.

Gu Ma Jia review 姑妈家

[ Media Invite ]

Since our last visit, we know Gu Ma Jia (姑妈家) always deliver quality and healthy home-cooked food (no MSG). Families can always enjoy good food in a cosy environment.

We were invited to a food tasting session for the latest 私房菜(family recipes), some of which will be available for Chinese New Year feasts.

Herbal Chicken (富贵鸡) – (rated 3.5/5)
Best tonic for cold weather, broth is rich and nutritious and kids scooped up every last drop. The chicken has absorbed all the nourishing essence.

Home-made Yam Ring with Kyoto pork ribs ($30) – (rated 3.75/5)
Some love the succulent Ribs, others love the crispy Yam. Delightful combination of sweetness and crispiness.
Gu Ma Jia Recommendation

Satay Cuttle Fish ($18) – (rated 2.75/5)
The satay sauce lacks punch and Daddy thought the cuttle fish slices might be too chunky. Kids and grandparents might have difficulty chewing.

Gu Ma Jia’s signature enzyme drink. Daddy googled and understand Enzyme drink comes from fermented fruits or vegetables. This drink started sour (like plum 酸梅) and slowly gets more refreshing near the bottom. Maybe the jellies make the drink sweeter?

Adults love it but our kids have second thoughts.

Traditional Bean curd Soup ($28) – (rated 3.5/5)
Daddy described it as comfort soup, every scoop gives us a soothing feel. Boiled over 6 hours with fresh ingredients like fish head, pork ribs and bean curd.

XO Prawn Noodles ($36) Yummy! – (rated 3.75/5)
Boon Wee and adults love the yummy noodles. No wonder, it must be the superior XO sauce inside (sic).

Indulgent dish, prepared with the freshest prawns! Everyone helped themselves to at least two prawns. Daddy was too slow to take photo and it was already half gone when it reached him haha.

Do take note the noodle is slightly spicy 🙂

Ubin Lala Bee Hoon ($18) – (rated 4/5)
Everyone love this dish, tasty and appetising. The sweetness of the lala mixed with thick rice vermicelli. Daddy was curious about the name Ubin until he learnt that 姑妈 grew up and honed her cooking skills on Pulau Ubin.

Delicious Prawn Paste chicken wings – (rated 3.5/5)
This is a must try at Gu Ma Jia, and we order extra servings 🙂

Lotus Leaf Rice (河叶饭) – (rated 3/5)
Pardon the photo quality, the 臘腸 (preserved meat lak4 chang2) goes well with the rice.

Desserts for kids and adults, ice cream and “姑妈糖水”.

Thank you 姑妈 (Gu Ma) for the invitation, our family had an enjoyable dinner. You might wish to check out 姑妈家’s Chinese New Year reunion cuisines on their Website and Fanpage. Set menus start from $488, no service charge and GST.

Do pop by our previous Assam Fishhead feast too!

姑妈! This is the kids’ (SengkangBabies and PerfectFather) way of expressing their satisfaction 🙂
