Taichung Fengjia Night Market and Green Hotel

We visited 逢甲夜市 Fengjia Night Market twice, kids had a lot of fun trying their luck at the UFOs. Everyone had fun spotting their favourite snacks 🙂

This is the last article on 台中 Taichung, we have rated this city as the best in our 10D9N exploration. Visit our Taichung Fun and Eat list below, and share more good Taichung food with us 🙂

Fengjia Night Market
Fengjia Night Market

We chose 葉綠宿旅館 Green Hotel for its close proximity to Night Market and street activities . (GPS 24.176662, 120.643222)

Fengjia Night Market is just 5 minutes walking distance away.

Comfortable, Neat and Clean, we had a relaxing two nights at this hotel. Love the green theme (with a vertical planter) and you can find snail mascots everywhere. You can even adopt your own pot of plant 🙂

The 24-hours laundry service next door allowed us to clean and dry our clothes, and cafe downstairs serve delicious donuts.

Useful map below highlighted all the popular cafes and eateries nearby.

Two popular venues nearby are 牛肉面 Beef Noodles and Duck Noodles.

尊品原汁牛肉麵 (Gps 24.175866, 120.644212)

Tender with a slightly herbal stock (Rated 3.5/5), we enjoyed the noodles but appreciated our short couple rendezvous more.

當歸鴨麵線 (GPS 24.175559, 120.644819)

We pass by this stall and saw long queues on both days. Stall front looks discreet but the duck must be good! (especially in cold weather).

A pity we did not try this, do hunt for stall in the small lane. You will see the queue first, delicious photos at Google link.

The highlight of course would still be 逢甲夜市 Fengjia Night Market.

Many entrances but this is the main one (GPS 24.175980, 120.645527). The name of the night market came from the nearby University.

Opposite  Fengjia Night market, these two stalls are packing in the crowds every evening!

Takoyaki and 明倫蛋餅 Ming Lun (Traditional egg crepe)

You might need to wait for 15 to 20 minutes, if you want to avoid the crowd, there is a second 明倫 Ming Lun  at (GPS 24.174782, 120.644381).

Once inside the night market, it was non-stop feasting and experimenting.

Some of the stall or food names are memorable and funny. But cheese and fried chicken is always popular with the crowd (ie long queues!)

台中夜市

Juicy cuttlefish and squid stalls are around every corner too 🙂

More food and souvenirs, kids were not impressed with Papaya Milk, even when I told them it is famous.

Toys and Souvenirs

Do walk along the back lane and alleys, no worry as the lanes are bright and safe. You will see boutique shops and more fancy food options.

Duck tongue is a delicacy for Taiwanese. But it is yucky for me!

I split out the 鴨舌 duck tongue after a few chew, no taste but I did not like the texture, the two long ‘pipes” extending from the tongue. As I chewed, image of the tongue wriggling in my mouth are stuffs of horror movie. Ok I exaggerated, but you will not be likely to see me attempt this delicacy again haha.

You will see an assortment on innards, pig’s blood cake(blood by-products are banned in Singapore), intestines and never seen before anatomy!

My darling forbid me from kissing her that night 🙁

Let us move to something less revolting, UFO crawlers! Kids and Dads normally are entertained by these claws.

Insert a coin, strategised and hope you grab your souvenir.
It is easy to stay here for 1 hour while the Mrs goes about her shopping without the nagging Husband.

It does not matter if you win the biggest or smallest toy from your attempt, any toy won is enough to send us into a frenzy #MissionAchieved !

What do we do when we are tired? Massage from one of the outlet we frequented, next to Fengjia Night Market (GPS 24.178402, 120.645088).

We visited Fengjia Night Market on two nights. If you love Taiwan street food, order less portion for your dinner. We always order 3 or 4 portions for our family of six, so we could enjoy more snacks and papaya milk :p

At Fengjia Night Market (or any 夜市 Night Market) for group of 3 plus, order multiple food and share. Each item is likely to cost between NTD40 to NTD100 (estimated 2 to 5 SGD).

Taiwan Day 4 – Taichung attractions

3D2N in 台中 Taichung, there are enough Taichung attractions to keep families entertained.

Nature, Hiking, hot Springs, 文创 Cultural, FOOD! Hey we did cycling at Houfeng too, thus far our best family activity in 台湾 Taiwan. More photos  in our Facebook albums (here).

I would recommend Taichung as a base to explore nearby counties.

1)East to 南投 Nantou (Cingjing), Xitou, Alishan and Sun Moon Lake
2)South to 彰化 Changhua, 台南 Tainan
3)North to Miaoli (Flying Cows and Strawberries)

Balmy 14 degrees, Blue skies, no more mist, and a pianist :p

Photo above show Ah Xin playing the piano at 中社觀光花市 Zhong She Flower Market.

We started the first 3 days of our Taiwan trip in the mountains and amidst the cold, cloud and mist, love it! But we sort of miss the Sun too.  (Our itinerary here )

We headed to Miaoli from Sun Moon Lake (2 hour trip), bypassing Taichung along the way. Miaoli is famous for Flying Cow Farm, but did you know Miaoli is also famous for strawberries and grapes?

Chapter 1 Strawberries

And the most famous street in 苗栗 Miaoli for strawberries must be 大湖 Dahu. The whole street left and right is packed with strawberry farms for at least two kilometres!

Our driver recommended 六合 (GPS 24.443889, 120.873889) because the hydroponic method meant we can pick the strawberries with ease.  Those traditional farms meant you need to squat and might be back breaking after 30 minutes.

This is the first season for Strawberries so many of them are still babies, not really plumb yet and slightly sour.

Part of the fun is challenging each other to find the biggest strawberry, snip snip. It will not take long to gather a full basket, make your payment (pay by grams) at the counter and enjoy some strawberry products.

These are not pluck by us, definitely looked richer and juicier!

On to the next stop, there are a lot of silver grass in the hilly  country side, glimmering and swaying under the sunlight. Many cyclists are challenging gravity too!

Chapter 2 Hakka Lunch and old Train station

Xiao Li told us that many 客家 Hakkas are staying around this area.

Ok, there are at least three “百年” 客家 restaurants along the street.  One of the best lunch we enjoyed in Taiwan was at 勝興客栈.

The internal decoration felt unchanged from the last decades, and the food was really delicious. The menu is written on the bamboo scripts (sorry we did not understand traditional Chinese and needed help with food ordering).

The whole dining experience felt like those 80s, 90s Hong kong dramas  客栈 (where are the 龙门客栈 swordsmen?), and the staff are super friendly.

Delicious home cooked food, the 扣肉 (pork) simply melted in our mouth.

Second round of rice for us, the chicken was a little bloody for the kids.

(Photo below) This is off the menu, camerised sweet potato. This is the bomb! Sweet, crunchy and appetising. Thank you 小李 for the lunch treat 🙂

-Would rate 勝興客栈 ( 4.5/5 ), highly recommended !
-GPS 24.388333, 120.781944 Google Review

Visited an old nostalgic Train station 勝興 across the road.  勝興車站 Sheng4 Xin 3 Train station is just across the road from our restaurant.

The cute Minion Kombi van was spotted in a carpark. Left photo (below) is the entrance, walk through and you will see the tracks.

Backdrop for more Instagram poses and selfies, you can walk inside the tunnel too. Not as happening and crowded as Shifen but interesting stop (literally) nevertheless.

You will see buskers and even a small street market along the street.

Chapter 3 Flowers! 中社花海

Fees apply, nice photo opportunities but go during the morning when the Scun is less harsh. I could imagined  weekends will be super crowded.

Kids taking a photo with our friendly driver and guide, 小李.
(Many bloggers know him)

*Take note 中社花海 “Zhong She” is different from 新社花海 “Xin She” (flower photos in link),  新社花海 is free but exhibition is only available in Nov and Dec.

Although both exhibitions are famous for flowers and equally stunning, if you want to pose with Pianos, choose 中社花海 (GPS 24.334388, 120.730397).

Entrance fee for Zhong She.

Lavender fields and many other variety of blooms. We would recommend minimum 45 minutes at this area. If you love photography or flowers, spend 2 hours here with your darlings 🙂

Kids can feed the fishes in the pond too.

The pianos in the center of the flower fields are super popular! Looks so drama!

More photo opportunities, 花痴 haha 🙂

Love the swings, which visitors eagerly pose with. Depending on the season, different flowerbeds will be curated.

Our favourite is still the mysterious Lavender. Many photobombs inside the flower fields, be patient to capture the best angle.

Taichung  attractions
Taichung  attractions

As we head back towards the city, the setting sun lingers over the horizon.

Chapter 4 Dinner street food or restaurant

We heard Steak Akaoni 赤鬼炙燒牛排 is popular (GPS 24.176006, 120.645352). Presentation looks good but meal is so so (rate 3.5/5)

Some of the Northern attractions mentioned in this blog post are in the screenshot below, do a Google and you will find many more Taichung  attractions.

We will blog about 逢甲夜市 Fengjia night market in another post. We love street food, thus we always order less for our main meals and complement with extra portions night Market !

Other attractions which you can try in Taichung, GPS all in our Google sheet.  We will share some of them on our Day 2 Taichung post.

-薰衣草森林 Lavender Cottage
-谷關溫泉 Guguan Hot spring
-大坑 Dakeng (choose from 10 hiking trails )

*后豐鐵馬道 Houfeng Cycling (link)
-火炎山溫泉渡假村 (hot spring)

Taiwan Day 4 – Cycling Taichung 台中

Cycling Taichung 台中 was the best family activity from our 10D9N Taiwan itinerary! We also mentioned before that we prefer Taichung to Taipei.

When we were researching for Taichung attractions (and there are plenty!), cycling caught our attention. I knew we had to cycle through the railway tunnel!

東豐綠色走廊 and 后豐鐵馬道 (Dongfeng and Houfeng, with 鐵馬 Iron Horse referring to trains) are two popular tracks for Cycling TaiChung.

Cycling Taichung
Cycling Taichung

I had actually Googled for Dongfeng entrance, but our driver sent us to Houfeng.

Go and Google Map “隧道口烤肉租車中心” (GPS 24.299679, 120.735695) for estimated bike rental location.

We rented our bikes and cycled South to 九號隧道 Tunnel No 9. Trains used to run through the tunnel!

I would recommend Tandem bicycles and motorised bikes for those less fit adventurous.

The famous no 9 tunnel entrance, many folks will stop to selfie here, slow down.

The tunnel is long and straight, very windy, we kept shouting to hear our own echoes haha.

(take note the tunnel is quite narrow, one lane in each direction, and overtaking requires some skill, kids should be good at balancing)

This iron bridge (花梁鋼橋) await you once you exit the tunnel, we would love to admire the 360 degrees scenery ( and waterway below), but the bridge might be too narrow for us to linger longer. We did not want to block  other cyclists.

iron bridge
iron bridge

It was only 5pm, but Sun was almost ready to set.

HouFeng (Purple) and DongFeng (Yellow) are two popular cycling paths in Taichung. If you have 2 hours, go for HouFeng (estimated 8 km to and fro), 3 hours+, go for DongFeng (estimated 14 km to and fro). Dongfeng track is famous for the “golden” Shigang Dam. Tunnel itself is about 1.5 km.

The highlights for both routes are the old train tunnel and iron bridge. We saw many joggers along the route too.

Looking at the map below (imagine it is inverted 180 degrees), we started nearer to the ranch and cycle “South” towards No9 Tunnel (九號隧道) and the “iron bridge” 铁桥 in the direction of Dongfeng.

Refer to our Google map for the points estimation.
(A=Houfeng Rental bike area, B=Entrance to No9 tunnel, C=Iron Bridge, D=Intersection of two bike tracks, and rental for Dongfeng, E= Shigang Dam)

Only Happy faces, the boys manage to look out for each other. And we do not cycle in jeans normally :p

Taiwan electric bike rental

As the track is one directional, you will not get lost. We can ask impatient kids to cycle infront and wait for us. We always emphasized that Road Safety is No1 priority.

There are a lot of shades along the route.

Why did we enjoy the cycling trip so much?

It was a fun activity which the whole family can participate together.
Electric bike allowed some of us to chill and enjoy the scenery, rather than worry about peddling.  Where else can you cycle through a tunnel!

=== Additional Tips ===

-First question, are you going to start at Houfeng(Gps 24.299679, 120.735695) or Dongfeng(Gps 24.272623, 120.740969)?
We started at Houfeng (and some call this track Houli Bkeway too, since this area is 后里 Houli district.)

-Bicycle track are easy to navigate, but it is challenging to avoid those taking selfies! Try not to selfie inside the narrow tunnel or at the bridge!

-The cooler 15 degrees weather in December Taiwan is ideal for sports, it can be chilly when the wind blows.

-There are many other scenic cycling spots in Taiwan, example Google “Sun Moon Lake 日月潭, Hualien 花蓮, Furong 福隆 etc). Taichung Gaomei Wetlands 高美湿地 should offer spectacular sunset routes too

*We did mentioned in this post (with Google Map reference) that Taichung is big and train network not as mesh as Taipei’s. It will be more time consuming to travel by public bus. Do plan your trip such that attractions are near to each other.

– Nearest station to Houfeng bikeway ( 后里 Houli station), and nearest station to Dongfeng bikeway is (豐原 Fengyuan station)

-Once you reach your “start point”, be it Houfeng or Dongfeng, many bike shops would be competing for your business

-If you are unsure of bicycle skill or fitness, go for eBikes (aka Motorised)
-Estimated bike rental rates is NTD400 and normal bikes NTD300

-Buy extra mineral water (just in case), there are bikes with baskets

Our kids wanted another round of cycling after our Taichung experience. We guaranteed that Cycling Taichung will me a memorable activity for your family in Taiwan.
