I know nuts about basketball.
Besides dunk and NBA, I do not understand other basketball lingos.
“Check, air ball, fast break, free throw, box out, travel, three pointers etc”
(Click for Basketball jargons to impress the kids)
But I do know Sports with children go together, and I am actively engaging the kids and family through more sporting activities.
Besides the tangible benefits like improved fitness and fun factor, the intangibles benefits are the parent and child bonding session, and character building (resilience and sportsmanship).
They were all laughing at me when I was played like a monkey or I constantly air ball and travel!
But I did not mind playing the fool and let the kids win haha π
Coming back to basketball or soccer, I did not transfer any “skills” to them, the younger ones were all motivated by their big brother.
The way they played looks professional and I was just a newbie (noob) in their basketball court haha.
My Uncle joints are still aching after last weekend’s basketball play, but I am game for more Sports session with my kids.
Do follow our Sports pursuit on the right panel (of blog), Hiking, Cycling and Running π
If basketball and soccer is too tiring, go for a hike around Singapore’s parks and nature trails.
We would recommend something easy, like our 2 hour Marang Trail from Habour Front to Labrador Park (album link).
Sports with Children, it is Free, Fun, and keep us Fit π
(keeps kids away from too much electronic games too)
love your self deprecative tone and intentional emphasis on ur kids! follow :))
Thanks for the kind words, we parents will do everything to engage the kids, especially during the crucial teenage years.
My elder one initially started with football and after that started losing interest in it. Nowadays he is planning to take up soccer.
Very normal Pooja. Whenever my No1 change sports, all the rest follow haha !
Whenever my schedule (and fitness ) allows, I try to learn from them π
Sports and the outdoors is so important, especially in our society where the emphasis is often too skewed on indoor pursuits.
‘Healthy body, healthy mind’, I say! The hubs and I really enjoy outdoor activities and trekking but we have yet to fully pass it on to our kids. Still hoping to train/convince/force them to do a 10k MacRitchie walk with us soon. Probably baby steps first…
Nparks, PCN, bring out the bikes and scooters π
Lyn, 10k MacRitchie is demanding for adults too haha (hold on first)
Sports or any other activities that require physical strength and stamina done with the kids are great form of family bonding time and like you said, it doubles the purpose of keeping them unplugged.
Yes Yes Cherry, agree 100% Exercise and family bonding. Healthy family, strong family π
I love it that the Big Korkor is patient enough to teach/demo basketball skills to the littler ones! Great job!
Yup yup, they can play 2×2 next time haha π
Good on you for spending time with the kids and encouraging them towards a healthy active lifestyle.

Applies to me too, Michelle. Now no more IPPT, kids and family are my only motivation to keep fit π
Sports time are great bonding opportunities and I try to come home earlier to go for jogs or play badminton with my girl too. Looks like daddy needs a lesson on basketball from your boys.

Yes Susan, Sports is always a good medium to engage the kids π
Hahaha.. I’m terrible at basketball too. In fact, any ball-related sports. The one sport I like is swimming, so we head to the pool quite often for some bonding time. The trails you shared about look fun too, so perhaps it’s time to start my kids on them.

Cheers to more outdoors enjoyment, Winnie π
For trails and hikes, do take note of fast bikes, hand on tight to the little ones.
Hey Andy…you amaze me once again and I totally agree…as parents we always want our kids to be ‘better’ than us…and that includes having interest that we don’t have. Trick is…sometimes we have to role model and it seems you’re doing a fine job! Go Go Andy! …

haha David, another trick is play dumb, and let the kids “teach” us.
It works wonders π
Awesome that you’re cultivating a lifelong love for health and fitness in the kids.. it will only do them good in life as there are soooo many carry-over skills, not just in their health but in the way they handle life too I feel π

Yes, absolutely true that sports and kids go together. I do believe in encouraging kids in sporting activities. Basketball is a great outdoor sport that keeps kids fit and energizes their body and mind. To allow the children to play the sport right, you need to make sure that they have comfortable athletic clothing while playing and participating in games.
