Our virgin Airbnb experience in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Some of the photos can be found in our photo albums, refer to links at end of page.
We are really late when it comes to booking an accommodation via Airbnb 🙂
Our family of six is considered big. Unfortunately, that means most Hotel policy would require us to book two rooms or opt for a suite (ie spend more money). That leaves us with apartments, and recently Airbnb.
But we have also heard of horror stories about Airbnb (robbery, rape, stolen luggage, damage of furnishings etc). What about location?
For most families, safety is the Number 1 requirement, we shortlist reliable hosts, ideally a house or apartment in a safe neighbourhood.
Second criteria for us is location and convenience.
No point hunting for cheapest home only to walk 15 to 20 minutes to train or bus services daily, this would be tiring for families with young kids.
Ideally there are amenities like hot water, aircon or wifi. Carpark facility (security) will be a plus point if we choose Malaysia Airbnb options. We read all previous customers’ feedback, especially those with kids.
Fortunately, we met a superb host in Chiang Mai to seal our Airbnb experience. We rented the whole house from Mo, which comes with three bedrooms. Although house is already 80 years old (with some creaking corners), we love the whole rustic ambience.
Kids obviously kept themselves busy playing hide and seek in the garden or feeding the guppies! We love the breakfast in the garden and I love the open air shower (can be chilly).
Above all, our experience was really positive due to our kind host Mo (and her Mum). Their family really loves kids and we felt really comfortable staying over for four nights!
We will definitely invite our friends to consider Baan Sri Dha for their future Chiang Mai options.
Friends and readers out there, if you have more recommendations and feedback for Airbnb selection, or even alternative accommodation options, do share with us.
We are excited about future options of loghouse, treehouse, farm house and other exotic options.

Have browsed through Airbnb for our Taiwan trip but havent had the chance to book one yet. Would love to give it a try if we found any apartment suitable.
Another fun option to explore, and perhaps savings. We know Airbnb in Thailand offers more bang for the buck 🙂
Haven’t had the chance to try Airbnb but if can find a reliable host, i think it’ll b a whole new experience 🙂 Tqvm for sharing urs!!

We fell in love with the wooden house at first sight!
Was actually planning for tree-house (too adventurous haha) but I guess this wooden house is a good option too 🙂
Great to read your experience. I am toying with the idea of trying out Airbnb for our travel. Lets see how it goes.

Happy Shortlisting and reviewing 🙂
Wow, an exotic home away from home makes a wonderful experience for the kids! It’s really nice that your kids get to appreciate nature, and going back to basics. It’s not often we get to experience that ourselves too. Have a blessed 2017!

Breakfast not always bundled together, Jamie. But we do not mind, as we love to explore local food joints 🙂
This Dec is also our first time and one time so far booking Airbnb. We searched for Super host and found one in Rovaniemi, Finland. Wonderful experience, will share more in my upcoming travel posts

Glad you find an ideal “vacation “home”, with SuperHost too 🙂
I just pop by Airbnb Finland and jaw-dropped at the scenery! (view of sea, lake, snow-capped mountains! )
(and I had initially thought Finland more ulu than SG)
We use Airbnb more often now because some houses are really lovely and can fit so many more people! I also like the idea that there are more space than the usual bed-and-tv set up in hotels. :p

I definitely need the extra legrooms haha! And so far we are amazed with the hosts’ passion and response.
Airbnb Feels more personal rather than commercial.
Airbnb should engaged us to promote their services :p
We also had a pleasant Airbnb experience during our event trip to Malacca..haven’t shared about it yet though. 🙂 It was our first time, and I think we’ll be more keen to do so in future.
